Distinct Challenges in Indonesia’s Vape Market
A closer look at the Indonesian vape market reveals the particularly unique tax policies surrounding e-cigarette products. Disposable e-cigarettes face significant challenges in Indonesia, primarily due to these stringent tax regulations.
The Indonesian government imposes a relatively low tax on domestically produced e-liquids, charging only 445 IDR per milliliter. In contrast, close-pod system pre-filled e-liquids are taxed at a staggering 6,030 IDR per milliliter—13 times higher. As a result, most vape products sold in Indonesia are under 3ml in volume.
This policy not only makes it difficult for disposable vapes to gain traction in the Indonesian market but also intensifies competition. Vape manufacturers are increasingly turning to open-system vape products in search of opportunities to break through.
The Dominance of Open-System Vapes
Despite various challenges, the Indonesian market continues to show its unique vibrancy and potential. Under the influence of tax policies, open-system vapes have captured consumer attention with their superior user experience and diverse product options, gradually asserting their dominance in the market.
Particularly, products with minimalist designs and premium materials, such as the RELX, OXVA's Xlim series, and the locally produced FOOM pod by domestic e-liquid brands, have gained widespread acclaim. These products stand out for their excellent flavor, stable performance, and sleek, fashionable designs.
